Friday Reads | An Enchantment of Ravens

Friday Reads was invented by The Candid Cover and is a merge of:

  • Book Beginnings which is a book meme hosted by Rose City Reader where we share the first sentence(s) of a book.
  • The Friday 56 which is hosted by Freda’s Voice where we share a snippet from page 56 of a book (or 56% on an e-reader).

Book Beginnings:

The first line of An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson:

“My parlor smelled of linseed oil and spike lavender, and a dab of lead tin yellow glistened on my canvas”

It’s a very quaint and calm first sentence that immediately conjures up distinct smells and colours in the reader’s imagination. I also think this sentence really captures the essence of Rogerson’s writing style.

The Friday 56:

A snippet of page 56 of An Enchantment of Ravens:

“My legs moved in fits and jerks, like a marionette’s legs controlled by a puppeteer. Senseless panic seized me. No matter how fiercely I railed against my body’s betrayal, I couldn’t stop walking.”

An Enchantment of Ravens is about the faerie and it’s annoying how generally, in these types of books, the faerie are so annoyingly entitled around humans and they think just because they’re powerful it’s alright to control and manipulate humans for their own purposes and amusement.

What are you reading this Friday? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Did you enjoy An Enchantment of Ravens? I’ve heard some mixed things but haven’t read it yet. I’m currently reading and enjoying Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett, I’m about six chapters from the end and at that stage where I think I’m starting to work out what’s happened in the plot! 🤣

    1. I did enjoy An Enchantment of Ravens- I rated it 4 stars. I liked the characters and the writing style especially but the plot was a bit confusing. I’ve heard it compared to A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas but they are completely different. I hope you enjoy Onyx and Ivory, I really liked it. I actually wrote a non spoilery review for it if you want to check it out.
